Serial Box is a serial number database for the Macintosh. Serial Box 2 is a new file format for this database first released
in September 2005. The new format added a lot of new features to Serial Box. Some of these include:
more metadata like system identifiers
information about the programs like the developer and the software category
encrypted releases for security
compressed to provide more information in a smaller file
link to the internet to get dynamic information about software, like up-to-date download links or latest version
The new format cannot be read with previous Serial Box reader programs. That's why new programs were developed to read Serial Box 2 files. One of these is this program, iSerial Reader. This new reader gives you access to all the great features of the new format giving you the best serial experience.
Security Certificate
Serial Box 2 files are encrypted. Reader programs need special keys to decrypt them. This is called the Security Certificate. Each reader program contains a security certificate that will be valid for a limited time. In the welcome dialog, as well as when you open a Serial Box 2 file, it will tell you for how many more days the security certificate inside this program is valid. After the security certificate has expired this program can no longer open Serial Box 2 files that were released after the certificate expired. It can still open files that were released before that date. To get a new security certificate you need to upgrade this program to a newer version. Newer versions will always include the latest security certificate.
The security certificate means that this program will only read files that were released by the Serial Box team. It is not possible for a third party to modify the serial box file. Corrupt, damaged or incomplete files are also not possible to open. This means that you will always be using a clean file as it was released by the team and you can be assured that it is authentic.
